1 · The space
Interior rooms don't add heating load — only the exterior shell does (rooms affect distribution; see partitioning). Multi-story: height = the full heated stack (2 floors × 10 ft = 20). Below-grade basement walls lose far less to ground than to air, so basement estimates run conservative.

3 · Describe the enclosure as it stands
Each stage sets the R-value and air-exchange rate shown. Conduction = wall + roof area × ΔT ÷ R; infiltration = vol × ACH ÷ 60 × 1.08 × ΔT. Partitioning affects heat distribution, not total load — and matters far less when heat starts at the beginning of the season.
